Earn the NAHB Research Center "Green Approved" Product Seal

With the introduction of programs like NAHB's National Green Building Program (NAHBGreen), green building is becoming more and more mainstream in our industry. But, at the same time, consumers who are inundated with green claims in every facet of their lives are becoming more skeptical of those claims. Builders and designers are looking for products that truly contribute to making a home green and supporting their marketing and certification-based claims.

To help bridge the gap between manufacturers who make products eligible for National Green Building Certification points and builders/designers who want to use them, the NAHB Research Center created the "NAHB Research Center Green Approved" product seal of approval program. This program requires manufacturers provide appropriate third-party evidence that their products meet the criteria for recognition in buildings certified to the National Green Building Standard™. "Green Approved" products carry a certificate from the NAHB Research Center that identifies the specific section(s) of the Standard where points for the product are available. This information, available on this site and the Green Scoring Tool, will facilitate designers' selection/specification of products to be used in green homes, and the approval of those points by accredited green building verifiers.

Process for attaining the "Green Approved" seal:

1. Get a copy of the National Green Building Standard™
   • Review the Standard and identify any relevant practice areas for your product(s) on the Green Approved application.
2. Request an application from Harris Floyd (202-266-8208) or Chris Hood (202-266-8684)
3. Prepare the application
   • Complete the application electronically - no handwritten applications accepted!
   • Read the application thoroughly for important instructions.
   • Identify relevant Standard practice areas for your product(s).
   • Send any questions you may have to Chris or Harris - they will help you sort it out.
4. Review the application for completeness
   • Make sure third-party certifications are attached.
   • Make sure fee is attached - credit cards accepted.
   • Don't forget to sign and include the Manufacturer's Agreement!
5. Send it in!
   • All listings are posted on a first-come first-served basis, so get your package in.
6. NAHB Research Center staff reviews the application and supporting 3rd-party documentation
   • NAHB Research Center staff determines the approvable points by section and any applicable conditions
   • "Green Approved" Certificate provided to manufacturer with logo use license.
7. Product(s) posted on the Green Approved Products website!
   • Product listings will be accessible from the appropriate practice on the Green Scoring Tool.

Manufacturer benefits for having products "Green Approved":

• Recognition that your product is "Green Approved" and can be used by builders to earn points toward certification to the National Green Building Standard
• Ability to market "Green Approved" reports on your website, and have them integrated into the National Green Building Certification Scoring Tool and listed on this website
• Hyperlink to your "Green Approved" product listing from all applicable sections of the Green Scoring Tool
• Link to your product website from the "Green Approved" product listing
• Eligibility to use "Green Approved" logo on your approved products and promotional literature
